Abstract The present work reports an initial engineering approach for fabricating lysozyme-bound regenerated cellulose fiber and film. Glycine-esterified cotton was dissolved in an ionic liquid solvent 1–Butyl–3–methylimidazolium Chloride (BMIMCl) in which lysozyme was activated and covalently attached to cotton cellulose through an enzymatic conjugation between its carboxyl groups and glycine cellulose’s amino groups. The resulting solution was extruded for fiber/film formation in a water bath. After performing a bicinchoninic acid (BCA) protein assay, quantity of attached lysozyme to cellulose fiber/film was evaluated. The study exhibited that a synthesis of lysozyme conjugation on cellulose in BMIMCl could be completed in a control manor, resulting in a cellulose solution suitable for fiber/film production. It was also found that lysozyme could be successfully immobilized onto the cellulose fiber and film regenerated from solution spinning with a reasonable amount ranging from 197.6 to 343.7 μg/mL.mg.

In Vitro Biocontrol of Escherichia coli Through the Immobilization of its Specific Lytic Bacteriophage on Cellulose Acetate Biodegradable Film

Background and Aims: Bacteriophages are mandatory bacterial parasites that are harmless to human and animal, which are used by dipping or spraying in food as natural antimicrobial agents. The use of these methods leads to wasting or trapping of phage in food, but its immobilization on the polymer surface facilitates the contact of phage with the host cell at the food surface. Therefore, the aim...

Multilevel composition fractionation process for high-value utilization of wheat straw cellulose

BACKGROUND Biomass refining into multiple products has gained considerable momentum due to its potential benefits for economic and environmental sustainability. However, the recalcitrance of biomass is a major challenge in bio-based product production. Multilevel composition fractionation processes should be beneficial in overcoming biomass recalcitrance and achieving effective conversion of mu...

Nanofibers of cellulose and its derivatives fabricated using direct electrospinning.

A short review with 49 references describes the electrospinninng (ES) process for polysaccharides, cellulose and chitosan, and their derivatives, including cellulose acetate and hydroxypropyl cellulose. A majority of applied studies adopted a two step-process, in which the cellulose acetate was used for the first ES process, followed by acetyl group removal to regenerate cellulose thin fibers. ...

Physical immobilization of Rhizopus oryzae lipase onto cellulose substrate: activity and stability studies.

Rhizopus oryzae lipase (ROL) was immobilized by adsorption onto oxidized cellulose fibers and regenerated films. The maximum adsorption level increases with the raise in the amount of carboxylic groups on cellulose surface confirming that adsorption is being governed mainly by electrostatic interaction between the enzyme and the substrate. This hypothesis was further confirmed by zeta-potential...

Fabrication of Cellulose Film with Enhanced Mechanical Properties in Ionic Liquid 1-Allyl-3-methylimidaxolium Chloride (AmimCl)

More and more attention has been paid to environmentally friendly bio-based renewable materials as the substitution of fossil-based materials, due to the increasing environmental concerns. In this study, regenerated cellulose films with enhanced mechanical property were prepared via incorporating different plasticizers using ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl) as the solv...
